WHY IT APPEARS THAT WE IN CHRIST ARE IN BONDAGE AND NOT FREE LIKE WE CLAIM.

WHY IT APPEARS THAT WE IN CHRIST ARE IN BONDAGE AND NOT FREE LIKE WE CLAIM.

I guess it is so easy for those in the world to think we are the ones under bondage. This is probably because we have so many restrictions in the way we dress, talk, sometimes even walk. Basically, in our conduct. So, sometimes it sounds weird if someone says they are the ones under bondage.😒

As a child, that statement did not make sense to me either. I wanted them to say something like, “They are slaves but we are slaves too”. So in my mind they were the free slaves and we were the restricted slaves.😕😕

But we are the free slaves. Well, I will explain. What if I told you that they are slaves to their sins, sinful habit, sinful nature, the world and of course the devil. The simple truth is that they are manipulated into believing that that is what they want or what they consider fun.😌😌😀

Well, I’ll give you an extreme example. In the case of a drug addict, they find it fun and nice, so they won’t stop and they will continue to take it in until they get addicted. Their body tells them that it is the right thing to do.  However, the ones that realize their addiction still go back to it because they cannot help it. Unless, they get serious rehabilitation, they cannot get out except with the help of God.

It sounds weird, but this also applies to human beings even without drugs. Imagine that immediately after the fall at Eden, any person born into the world has a brain like that of a drug addict. But in this case, it is sin addict. They know how to lie, steal and other form of sins. They also have a push towards these things because their brain has been sequenced to that of a sin addict.

Has anyone ever thought about how a 2-year-old learnt to lie? Well, I’ve thought about it. And their brain has been sequenced to it. They also want things and if they can’t get them, they go through a not-so-direct means. Some of you may disagree with me but it is true. However, the discipline of a parent or guardian can suppress the sin urge in young children.

But it is very important to know that the term sin is a very broad term. There different forms of sins. So many varieties. In fact, I do not think that anything has more forms and varieties than sins. A single sin can exist in so many forms, that some dispute that some of the forms are not sin. Also like drugs, where a drug dealer may have to introduce a particular drug to a drug addict. A friend, colleague, phones, ads, may introduce a person to a different sin.

And just like a drug addict, a person’s sin addicted brain will also get tired of a small sin and go for a bigger and seemingly more fun sin without getting rid of the small sins. Well we all know that a drug addict is in bondage to drugs, so a sin addict is also in bondage to sin. So sin addicts -as all who are not in Christ are- are slaves to sin.

“Do not CONFORM to the PATTERNS of this world, but be TRANSFORMED by the RENEWING of your MIND. Then, you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is- his good perfect and pleasing will.” Romans 12:2.

Now this is the clause, this is what makes the difference. We will only be able to be free from SIN if we no longer have a sin addicted mind. So once you have been born again, your mind becomes renewed. It is kind of like speed rehabilitation for your transformed mind.

However, what happens when a drug addict comes out of rehab and is immediately tempted with the drugs he went to rehab for. Most of the time once exposed they go back again. So people try as much as possible to keep such people from seeing drugs as well as keeping them from their drug addicted friends.

But in sin addiction case, you are completely exposed to sins and no one is trying to hold you back in the physical sense of things. So sin addicts are worse than drug addicts. That is why many people go back to their vomit, starting with their most tempting sin, then to other basic sins. So, they are slaves to their sinful nature because at this point the things I want to do I do not, but the things I no longer want to do.

So we should not expose ourselves to things that will tempt us  sinning. For it is what we hear and see that fills our heart. “And out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.” So once we are born again, we should not expose ourselves to evil.

So people say, it is impossible not to commit sin. But the Bible says, “Be ye holy as your heavenly father is holy”. Now that sounds impossible. Then you start thinking, how am I going to be as holy as God.

Well, it is simple. Become a slave to righteousness. That sounds exhausting and unfair right. You are probably thinking, “God wants me to be happy, God wants me to play.” Yeah kind of true. God wants you to be joyful not being happy alone. He wants you to feel what only He can make you feel. That is Joy, joy is not found in what you have, not in what you do but in God.

But you can only remain in Christ, become sanctified, then holy, if you are in the spirit. Then once you accept Jesus as your personal lord and savior, try to live in the spirit and become a slave to righteousness. As, this is the only way to beat your sin addicted mind and maintain your renewed mind in salvation.

Please read Romans chapter 5 to 8. I feel like I did not do justice to the topic.

If you are no longer interested in that sin addicted mind and you want God to give you a transformed and renewed mind. Please pray this:

“Lord, Jesus Christ, I invite you into my life and my mind. I believe you died for me and on the third day you rose again that I may be justified. I do not want to be of this world even though I am in this world. I want to become yours alone. I want to live a life that is pleasing to you and to reciprocate the love you have for me.”

STEPS TO OVERCOMING A SIN ADDICTED LIFE.

1. Accept Jesus Christ as your lord and savior.

2. Avoid anything and anyone that arouses and increases your thirst for sin (including websites conversations and ads).

3. Take control of your thoughts. Take captive every thought contrary to God’s word.

4.  Live by the spirit.

5. See yourself as a friend of God.

6.  Ask God to help you live sanctified and holy life.

  1. Thanks Minister Eniola Iyiola, we've all been programmed to be sin addicts since the fall of Adam and Eve. Remedy from this addiction is the blood of Jesus Christ, which can only be gotten through personal convictions and motivation to be free from the addiction just like the conventional addictions like substance, internet, gambling, porn, shopping, etc.
